Flutterflies is the new Weekend Max Mara Signature Collection for the Spring Summer 2021 designed in collaboration with American illustrator and pop artist Donald Robertson
Robertson’s prolific 30-plus-year career spans fashion and media with his witty, vivid art and cartoonish character compositions a longstanding favorite among the industry’s top players. Untiring and ever resourceful, Robertson injects his fun-loving creativity into the new Weekend Max Mara Signature collection, presenting at Milan Fashion Week from September 23rd to September 27th.
Drenched in a vibrant palette and lively prints, the collection brings a jolt of energy to the warm weatherseason. “It’s all very fun! Easy breezy. Or tongue-in-chic as I call it,” says Robertson.
Prints rule, mirroring Robertson’s idiosyncratic emblems, techniques, and vision. Clean, crisp lines define the feel-good selection with colorful motifs that reflect both Robertson’s signature realm and Weekend Max Mara’s longtime symbol, the butterfly.
In all their delicate beauty and lightness, butterflies flutter as vivid prints or hand-cut from colored gaffer tape with a subtle roughness evocative of what a kid would make in art class. Similarly, the eclectic artist reimagines his hallmark favorite medium – the gaffer tape - as colorful cotton strips that accentuate the waist and necklines on dresses, shirts, and pencil skirts.
The effect is “gaffer-taped together,” as Robertson puts it. Besides butterflies, the capsule brims with stylized “Flutterfly” women, colorful tape-inspired stripes, and printed versions of Robertson’s sinuous handwriting. All the patterns in their colorful glory trickle down to the iconic Pasticcino Bag and onto fun sneakers.
Interpreted by American model Sofia Richie, the spirit of the collection is captured by photographer Dewey Nicks, whose authentic visual sense and outstanding knowledge of the arts have shaped popular culture for years.
